From Curriculum to Practise: Using Decodables in Kindergarten
Ontario has released a new Kindergarten curriculum, effective September 2026. In this updated framework, Kindergarten expectations are now formally mapped onto the Language Foundations Continuum for Reading and Writing, which outlines the concepts to be taught in a systematic and explicit way.
Decodable books play an important role in supporting this approach. They give students opportunities to practice newly taught skills in engaging and meaningful contexts, reinforcing phonics and early reading development, and helping students develop a joy of reading.
This webinar explores the recent changes to literacy instruction in Ontario and examines how decodable books are designed and used. It also highlights how these texts differ from traditional levelled books. In addition, the session provides practical strategies for small-group instruction and ideas for tracking student progress.
