Our Yellow DECK-odable Set includes 150 cards that provide systematic practice of the concepts introduced in our Yellow Series.

Each 5 x 7 card consists of a picture and a decodable word, phrase, or sentence. On the back of each card is a breakdown of the concepts included in the text. The font is large with extra spacing between words and lines, and we use a font with the single story <a>. These engaging cards can be used for decoding practice, oral language discussions, games, and much more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Decodable books are sequential and skill-based. Different regions may have different curriculum sequences, so it is important to compare our Scope and Sequence with your own curriculum resources.

For example, in Ontario (where we are based), the concepts covered in the Yellow Series are covered in our Kindergarten Curriculum.

The Yellow DECK-odable Set follows the same Scope and Sequence as the Yellow Series. There are multiple cards for each step. Here is the breakdown of all 150 cards:

  • Book 1 – Cat Nap/Nat Sat: Cards 1 – 30
  • Book 2 – Pig Pit/A Big Bug!: Cards 31 – 60
  • Book 3 – The Dip/In the Bin: Cards 61 – 80
  • Book 4 – On the Rug/The Pup: Cards 81 – 95
  • Book 5 – The Hot Dock/Huck: Cards 96 – 105

Yes. Our Yellow DECK-odable Set is on UFLI’s Decodable Text Guide. You will notice that many of our DECK-odable cards fall within the first 20 lessons of UFLI’s Scope and Sequence. The cards are a great resource when you are just starting instruction with your students, and they have only been introduced to a small number of letters and sounds. The DECK-odable cards provide a great stepping stone for students if they are not yet ready for the first books in our series.

There are many ways that educators can use the DECK-odable cards. Here are a few examples:

  • Building confidence during early lessons: When students know only a few grapheme/phoneme correspondences, a whole book can be a bit overwhelming. Starting with the DECK-odable cards can help students build confidence and fluency, while still reading meaningful text.
  • Pre-reading/warm-up activities: Students can read several DECK-odable cards as a warm-up before reading a book.
  • Oral Language Development: Each card contains a picture, chosen with care. Students can wonder, discuss, predict, and infer what is happening in the card, or what is about to happen. Vocabulary development can occur through these intentional discussions.
  • Games and Activities: The DECK-odable cards lend themselves to games and activities. Students can read or dictate the phrases on the cards to a partner as part of games in the classroom.
  • Shared Reading: The cards can be projected and used for group shared reading and discussion.
  • At-home practice: The cards can be sent home for additional practice.

Testimonial Slider

There are a lot of decodable series out there, ranging widely in quality, and SyllaSense is my absolute favourite. With a clear, well-paced scope and sequence, attractive illustrations and photos, and engaging content, SyllaSense books are well-used in my kindergarten classroom – and throughout my school and board. I choose the literacy companies I collaborate with very carefully, and have been so pleased to have the opportunity to review and edit new titles in partnership with SyllaSense. Thank you for the care and attention put into such a fantastic series!
