Teal Series
Content Columns
The Teal Series has a range of text structures, including fiction and non-fiction.
Some texts have more of a narrative structure, describing what the characters are doing and experiencing. Other texts are true non-fiction texts, which help to build students’ understanding of our world. The series includes engaging topics ranging from cooking, to camping, to trips to the park. The Teal Series is parallel to the Blue Series in terms of the level of difficulty, however each series covers different concepts. You can choose to start with either Teal or Blue, depending on your instructional sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Teal Series is parallel to the Blue Series in terms of the level of difficulty. They both start with long vowels in open syllables (words such as “no”, “he”, and “cry”), then they diverge.
We advise educators to review our Scope and Sequence carefully, and decide whether to start with the Teal or the Blue, depending on the sequence you like to follow. If you like to begin with teaching the vowel-consonant-e pattern (e.g., “cake”), then start with the Teal Series. If you prefer to begin with some of the most consistent vowel digraphs (eg., tree), then start with the Teal Series.
Decodable books are sequential and skill-based. Different regions may have different curriculum sequences, so it is important to compare our Scope and Sequence with your own curriculum resources.
For example, in Ontario (where we are based), the concepts covered in the Teal Series are covered in our Grade 1 Curriculum.
Some of the books in Teal are non-fiction, e.g., “The Marsh”, and some, such as “The Camping Trip”, are more of a narrative structure, describing what the characters are experiencing.

It is essential for students to have multiple opportunities to practice each literacy concept. Our Teal Square book set follows the Teal Series Scope and Sequence, providing an additional book at each step to reinforce learning and build confidence. Our goal is to write at least 2 sets of books, and at least 1 set of DECK-odables cards, for each colour in our Scope and Sequence.
