The Purple Series is our final series, and it introduces a wider range of affixes and the replace <e> suffixing convention.

As the texts become more complex and include more multisyllabic words, students need to become mindful of “stress” and “schwa”. The Purple Series has a slightly smaller font size and spacing, which leads to longer passages and a greater selection of words to explore. Many opportunities are provided for students to investigate how affixes carry meaning, and how they affect the overall sense of a base when combined. The series includes stories that are both narrative and non-fiction.

  • Digraphs <wr> and <kn>
  • Suffix <-y>, <-er>, <ful>, <-est>, and <-ly>
  • Prefix <un-> and <re->
  • High-Frequency Words (“their”, “where”, and “there”)

Frequently Asked Questions

Decodable books are sequential and skill-based. Different regions may have different curriculum sequences, so it is important to compare our Scope and Sequence with your own curriculum resources.

For example, in Ontario (where we are based), the concepts covered in the Purple Series are covered at the end of our Grade 1/beginning of Grade 2 Curriculum.

Some of the books in the Purple Set are non-fiction (e.g., “Red Foxes”), and some, such as “The Insect Hunt”, are more of a narrative structure, describing what the characters are experiencing.

Yes. The Purple Series is part of 2 different bundles:

Bundle B (includes Blue, Teal, Red, and Purple):

Full Series Bundle (includes Yellow Series, Green Illustrated, Green Photo, Blue, Teal, Red, and Purple):

Note: Our new Yellow Square Set is not yet in a bundle. This is our newest set, and a 20% off introductory offer will be in place until June 30, 2025.

At this time, we don’t intend to write a series to follow the Purple. Decodable texts are a very important tool for beginning readers, but as readers progress and have a good understanding of our language, it is important to move to less controlled texts.

I’ve used SyllaSense decodables since 2022, and I cannot say enough positive things about this series! What I love most is that SyllaSense decodables come with a clear, systematic scope and sequence that can be partnered with any phonics program to enhance decoding as well as build vocabulary and comprehension skills. The print is the perfect size, and the images are engaging and colorful! As students progress, the red and purple series are fabulous additions to any social studies, science, or knowledge-building project. SyllaSense decodables are a must-have!
