Blue Series
Content Columns
The Blue Series has a range of text structures, including fiction and non-fiction.
Some texts have more of a narrative structure, describing what the characters are doing and experiencing. Other texts are true non-fiction texts, which help to build students’ understanding of our world. This series includes engaging topics ranging from sledding, to life in the city, to fun things to do at recess. The Blue Series is parallel to the Teal Series in terms of the level of difficulty, however each series covers different concepts. You can choose to start with either Blue or Teal, depending on your instructional sequence.
- Long Vowels in Open Syllables
- Vowel Digraphs <ee>, <ay>, and <ai>
- Compound Words
- High-Frequency words (“you”, “do”, “are”, “from”, and “one”)

Frequently Asked Questions
The Blue Series is parallel to the Teal Series in terms of the level of difficulty. Both Blue and Teal start with long vowels in open syllables (words such as “no”, “he”, and “cry”), then they diverge.
We advise educators to review our Scope and Sequence carefully, and decide whether to start with the Blue or the Teal, depending on the sequence you like to follow. If you like to teach a few simple vowel digraphs before the vowel-consonant-e pattern (e.g., “cake”), then start with the Blue Series. If you prefer to teach the vowel-consonant-e pattern first, then start with the Teal Series.
Decodable books are sequential and skill-based. Different regions may have different curriculum sequences, so it is important to compare our Scope and Sequence with your own curriculum resources.
For example, in Ontario (where we are based), the concepts covered in the Blue Series are covered in our Grade 1 Curriculum.
Some of the books in the Blue Set are non-fiction (e.g., “Bobcats”), and some, such as “At the Creek”, follow more of a narrative structure, describing what the characters are experiencing.
