Our Yellow Series provides a great starting point for beginning readers.
The font is large with extra spacing between words and lines, and we use a font with the single-story <ɑ>. The initial books and cards include short phrases, as well as sentences, to help beginning readers build their confidence. Simple orthographic conventions are also introduced, such as when to use <ck>.
- All Short Vowels & Single Consonants
- Consonant Digraphs <ck>, <ff>, <ll>, <ss>, and <zz>
- Suffix <-s>
- High-Frequency Words (“a”, “and”, “the”, and “to”)

Frequently Asked Questions
Decodable books are sequential and skill-based. Different regions may have different curriculum sequences, so it is important to compare our Scope and Sequence with your own curriculum resources.
For example, in Ontario (where we are based), the concepts covered in the Yellow Series are covered in our Kindergarten Curriculum.
The main reason for including phrases in our first few books is to give students a less intimidating starting point. For many students, “Cat Nap” and “Nat Sat” might be their first books. Having just one or two words on each of the first two pages helps students achieve success right from the start, and build their confidence moving forward.
Working at the phrase level:
- Gives students a less intimidating starting point
- Helps develop fluency
- Can help students understand the difference between phrases and complete sentences, which include a subject and a predicate
The Yellow DECK-odables follow the same Scope and Sequence as our Yellow Series Books. There are multiple cards for each step. Here is the breakdown of all 150 cards:
- Book 1 – Cat Nap/Nat Sat: Cards 1 – 30
- Book 2 – Pig Pit/A Big Bug!: Cards 31 – 60
- Book 3 – The Dip/In the Bin: Cards 61 – 80
- Book 4 – On the Rug/The Pup: Cards 81 – 95
- Book 5 – The Hot Dock/Huck: Cards 96 – 105
- Book 6 – In Bed/In the Bag: Cards 106 -115
- Book 7 – Pets/Kick!: Cards 116 – 130
- Book 8 – Fun in the Mud!/Mud!: Cards 131 – 140

It is essential for students to have multiple opportunities to practice each literacy concept. Our Yellow Square book set follows the Yellow Series Scope and Sequence, providing an additional book at each step to reinforce learning and build confidence. Our goal is to write at least 2 sets of books, and at least 1 set of DECK-odable cards, for each colour in our Scope and Sequence.
The Yellow Series is our first series, and it is typically used by students who are also learning to write the alphabet. When we teach students to print the letter <ɑ>, we model the “single story <ɑ>” (made by forming a <c> first). To help students strengthen the connection between writing and writing, we have used a font which includes the “single story <ɑ>”.
